Martha Larned: Featured Artist
Hunger Mountain Coop Cafe
June 2019

Martha Larned has a love of nature’s beauty. As a child growing up in Massachusetts she enjoyed planting in her family’s garden.  She then took a horticulture course at Wellesley College and floral design workshop in Burlington, Vermont.  Martha always enjoyed art, especially watercolors, with fond memories of finger painting as a child, and art classes in school.  Martha spent her summers and holidays in Montpelier, with her extended family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.  When she was 29, she moved to Vermont’s capital city.

Last June, Martha had near-death experiences, and, after months in the hospital and rehab, she slowly regained her strength.  During the healing process, she discovered she had a new gift for painting. Over the winter she honed her craft while transforming her life. We asked her about what those experiences have meant to her, below are edited excerpts from our conversation.

How did that experience impact or affect your art?

I feel blessed. I am so appreciative of everything. I’ve learned to have more patience with myself.  I’ve slowed down, and am taking good care of my body. I love pool therapy and working out every day.

What now inspires you to paint?

I love the spring time – looking at beautiful flowers and how nature changes every day.

What subjects do you most enjoy painting? Why?

I especially enjoy painting flowers and sometimes positive messages.

What do you hope people will take away from viewing your art? What do you hope their experience will be?  I hope people will feel enlightened, comforted, and satisfied.
